Chapter 40

Overview

Ellie’s sense of time collapses as Noelle alternates between gifts and threats, striking Ellie when she asks to go home. Noelle returns from seeing a "boyfriend," promises comforts, and keeps Ellie compliant. After a cheerful supper, Ellie is drugged and wakes knowing something happened, signaling Noelle’s plan advancing.

Summary

In captivity, Ellie loses track of days as her initial count of exams and dates dissolves. Noelle continues bringing small gifts and doting on the hamsters while withholding any explanation or release, taunting Ellie with hints of an “amazing plan.” Ellie aches for her family and cycles through memories of Laurel, Hanna, and her father, realizing family eclipses thoughts of Theo.

When Ellie pleads to go home, Noelle snaps, striking her and forbidding further talk of escape. The fear keeps Ellie compliant. That night Noelle returns late, drunk and heavily made up, bragging about a clever new boyfriend. She promises a TV, DVDs, and books to make the basement “as good as home,” feeding Ellie hope she dares not act on. Ellie considers attacking Noelle at the door but hesitates, and the moment is lost.

The next evening, Noelle brings a childlike meal and lingers, buoyant and confiding about age and appetite. She continues to act warmly while controlling every detail of Ellie’s life, reinforcing dependence with treats and attention.

As Ellie eats, her perceptions distort; the room darkens and Noelle’s features blur. She later wakes in the morning with an inexplicable certainty that something occurred while she was incapacitated, confirming that Noelle has advanced her secret plan without Ellie's consent.
