Chapter 15

Overview

Laurel, euphoric after her date with Floyd, researches him and yearns for more, but spirals when he doesn’t contact her. Seeking distraction, she visits her ailing mother, Ruby, who urges her to text him. Laurel sends a brief thank-you, and Floyd calls back at once, reigniting hope.

Summary

After a long, intoxicating dinner with Floyd Dunn, Laurel returns home and immerses herself in his online presence, discovering his career as a respected author on number theory and mathematical physics. She savors the memory of their chemistry, recognizes a desire to share the news even with her ex-husband Paul, and feels newly open to life beyond grief.

On Saturday, with close friends Jackie and Bel out of town, Laurel endures a silent day that feeds her insecurities. Without a call or text from Floyd, she convinces herself he was merely charming and has moved on, and her optimism collapses into self-doubt.

On Sunday, unwilling to face another empty day, Laurel visits her mother Ruby at the care home. Ruby, impaired by strokes but emotionally present, listens as Laurel describes Floyd and her anxious waiting. Ruby pushes Laurel to act, insisting she contact him.

Prompted by Ruby, Laurel sends a brief thank-you text, immediately fearing she has overstepped. Moments later, Floyd calls, abruptly reversing Laurel’s doubts and confirming mutual interest, marking a tentative turning point toward reengagement with love and life.
