Chapter 59
Overview
Laurel visits Floyd on Christmas Eve, both tense. After a brittle toast, Floyd gives Laurel a card, says goodbye, and leaves the house. His letter admits a terrible truth and promises to return her “most precious possession,” directing her to a video confession. Laurel enters his study and presses play.
Summary
Laurel arrives at Floyd’s, outwardly cheerful but inwardly anxious. Floyd, unusually tense, offers a Buck’s Fizz and toasts Laurel with effusive praise. Laurel stays wary, watching him pour the drink and asking about Poppy upstairs. Their exchange feels strained, and Laurel braces herself during an uneasy hug.
Floyd gives Laurel an envelope, then pauses in the doorway to say “Good-bye” before leaving the house. Alone, Laurel opens the card, which bears a dove and contains a letter.
In the letter, Floyd admits he is not right for her and declares he must let her go. He claims to hold something of Laurel’s—acquired through a “terrible sequence of events”—which he has cared for over five years and now intends to return. He asks that she see him as a man capable of being trusted with her most precious possession.
Floyd tells Laurel his study door is unlocked and that a video message on his desktop will explain everything. Laurel goes to the study, wakes the screen, and finds a video of Floyd in the same jumper, grief-stricken. She clicks play and begins watching his confession.
