Chapter 37
Overview
In the aftermath of her abduction, Ellie surveys a sealed basement room and realizes rescue will only come if someone is already searching. She attacks Noelle but is overpowered, restrained, and psychologically managed with promises and "treats." Noelle hints at an eventual end, deepening Ellie’s fear and hopelessness.
Summary
At dawn, Ellie drags a chair to a grimy basement window and peers out at a brick wall and cherry blossoms. Realizing she is hidden from view unless someone is actively searching, Ellie writes “help” and “Ellie” in the dirt and waits, clinging to hope.
When Noelle unlocks the door, Ellie attacks with the chair, then jumps on Noelle’s back to slam her head against the wall. Noelle proves stronger, restrains Ellie against the wall, chokes her until she is light-headed, and drops her on the sofabed, binding her ankles with a plastic tie.
Noelle admonishes Ellie to “work as a team,” threatening longer captivity for disobedience and promising “treats” for compliance. When Ellie stills, Noelle rewards her with a large chocolate bar, framing control and submission as the terms of survival and suggesting there will be an eventual end.
Left alone, Ellie eats the chocolate quickly and thinks of ordinary home routines—her sister Hanna, her father’s offer to help with math, leaving the house without looking back. The memories contrast brutally with her confinement, and Ellie cries, her hope dimming.
