Chapter 41

Overview

Time passes in Ellie’s captivity as seasons shift and Noelle controls information, supplying warmer clothes but withholding the date. Ellie experiences strange internal movements that suggest early pregnancy, a chilling consequence of the prior drugging. She briefly notices, then dismisses the sensation, underscoring her isolation and denial.

Summary

Ellie marks time only by weather and light as summer fades to a cooler season. Noelle supplies a fleece-lined hoodie and warm pajamas, while refusing to tell Ellie the date, reinforcing control with, “You do not need to know.”

One morning, Ellie feels a sudden internal judder, like a pop through her midsection. Fearing she lay on something, she jumps up and checks the bed, but finds nothing. The sensation stops, then returns when she lies down, making clear it comes from within her.

Ellie rubs her stomach, trying to quell the “bubbles” that seem to pop inside. After a while the sensations fade. By evening she has put the experience out of mind, though the momentary feeling of being “occupied” suggests an ominous development following Noelle’s earlier drugging.
