Chapter 36
Overview
Taraza arrives on Rakis and openly challenges Odrade, forcing a reckoning over the Tleilaxu alliance and the Duncan ghola. Odrade proposes that axlotl tanks are women and that Duncan may be engineered as a male analog to Honored Matres. They evaluate Sheeana as an asset or assassin, consider aborting her project, and resolve to confront Waff.
Summary
At dawn in the Rakian Keep, Odrade anticipates Taraza’s arrival and experiences a decisive inner shift toward independence. Taraza enters, framing their meeting as adversarial. Odrade defends her Tleilaxu alliance as necessary, while Taraza warns of existential risks to the Sisterhood.
Odrade advances a disturbing hypothesis: axlotl “tanks” are surrogate mothers—likely Tleilaxu females—which explains Waff’s evasions. They fear the Tleilaxu have implanted something new in the Duncan ghola, possibly making him a male counterpart to the Honored Matres’ lethal sexual imprinting. This would turn him into a conduit of influence or espionage, raising the stakes of Bene Gesserit contact with him.
Taraza reveals unstable reports from Gammu: Teg has reawakened Duncan’s memories and Duncan’s education has accelerated beyond plan; Lucilla’s status is unknown. The two debate killing the ghola before the Tleilaxu can reclaim him or before his altered nature destabilizes the Sisterhood.
They summon Sheeana for assessment. Sheeana answers with disciplined candor, demonstrating bridled Voice and composure, convincing Taraza of her potential. After Sheeana leaves, Taraza presses whether Sheeana could be used to kill the ghola if needed, reflecting fear of Duncan’s ability to forge dangerous bonds.
Reaffirming the need to stay inside the Tleilaxu alliance to shape outcomes, Odrade notes Waff’s aspiration for Tleilaxu ascendancy and the mutual leverage over breeding records and “tanks.” Taraza, intent on punishment and truth, orders Waff brought for interrogation as both leaders brace for the consequences of their entanglement.
