Chapter 14
Overview
Teg returns to Gammu with Taraza and Odrade, where Taraza secretly observes the Duncan ghola and stokes tension with Schwangyu. In private, Odrade reveals she is Teg’s daughter and the author of the Atreides Manifesto, charging Teg to make a truly human, independent decision for the Sisterhood. Odrade, stirred by a rare surge of feeling, then departs for Rakis.
Summary
Teg lands on Gammu unsettled by Taraza’s staged lesson aboard the Guildship and leads Taraza’s party into the Keep. He reflects on Gammu’s Atreides traits and Bene Gesserit breeding, noting Lucilla’s seductive eyes and deducing her role as an Imprinter. Taraza asks to watch the Duncan ghola unobserved, and Lucilla reports the boy’s training is progressing well. Schwangyu, angered by Taraza’s surprise arrival, masks her opposition only thinly.
Odrade declines Schwangyu’s invitation and asks to speak with Teg in private. As they walk, Odrade discloses that her female memories are fully open and that both she and Teg are Atreides. She proves intimate knowledge of Teg’s past, then reveals she is Teg’s daughter; Lucilla, she adds, comes from a parallel breeding line. Odrade further admits she authored the Atreides Manifesto at Taraza’s direction and that the Sisters intended the Tleilaxu to spread it.
Odrade tells Teg that a moment will come when he must decide freely, serving as the Bene Gesserit eyes who make a human choice beyond Sisterhood habit. Teg questions whether Reverend Mothers stand outside humanity, contrasting them with Guild Navigators; Odrade accepts his blunt assessment even as it pains her.
As Taraza and Lucilla rejoin them, Odrade recalls an Ixian-restored Van Gogh painting that makes her feel wholly human. Taraza remarks it is time for Odrade to depart for Rakis. Moved to real tears by the exchange and memory, Odrade agrees it is past time and prepares to go.
