Chapter 42

Overview

Duncan is lured into a booby-trapped Harkonnen outpost where Tormsa is killed and he is captured. Honored Matre Murbella sexually assaults him, triggering the Tleilaxu-imprinted cascade that restores all Idaho ghola memories.

Duncan reverses the technique and subdues Murbella. Her superior forbids his execution and orders Duncan sent to Rakis, shifting the struggle’s focus.

Summary

Duncan recalls moving with Tormsa through snow toward an old Harkonnen counting station near Ysai. Inside, lights flare and Tormsa’s eyes burst from a trap, leaving Duncan stunned and captured. Drifting between past and present, Duncan relives Atreides-era memories, Gammu’s history, and fragments of Paul’s prescient arrogance, struggling to situate himself.

Murbella appears, identifies herself, and begins an Honored Matre sexual assault. The stimulus ignites the Tleilaxu imprint-trigger in Duncan, flooding him with serial ghola memories—his many deaths, lives, and the horror of axlotl tanks. The pattern also unlocks a counter-technique embedded within him.

As Murbella intensifies, Duncan instinctively reverses the moves, turning her responses against her. He overwhelms her with escalating ecstasy until she loses control, experiencing sensations forbidden to Honored Matres. Briefly, Duncan glimpses observers behind a plaz barrier; his perceptions blur with memory and shock.

Reeling yet driven by training, Murbella tries to kill Duncan but collapses. She appeals to her locked-away superior, the Great Honored Matre, and a male guide. The Great Honored Matre intervenes, forbids any killing, and declares the ghola will be taken to Rakis, redirecting the conflict toward the desert world.
