Chapter 17
Overview
Odrade consolidates control on Rakis after the temple attack, establishing a covert-aware command post and eliminating eavesdropping priests loyal to Tuek. She triggers Bene Gesserit reprisals and receives Chapter House strategy: starve the Guild of spice, force Guild and Ix into overreach, and lure the Tleilaxu Master to Rakis. Odrade also confirms advanced Face Dancers and firmly asserts Voice-dominance to begin shaping Sheeana.
Summary
In the hours after breaking the assault on the Rakis temple complex, Odrade turns Sheeana’s quarters into a command center, conducting assessments and retaliation while testing Sheeana. She studies the oddly shaped room, deducing a concealed acoustic spy channel through a high ventilator disguised by a painting—undetectable to instruments but obvious to trained senses.
Odrade dispatches messages to Guild, Ix, and Tleilaxu—“You will pay”—and quietly orders surveillance maintained on the ventilator. When Chapter House replies, a Reverend Mother relays Taraza’s directives: the Tleilaxu are pivotal; cut Guild’s melange from Rakis, force Guild and Ix to overextend amid Scattering competition, ignore Fish Speakers, and trap the Tleilaxu Master coming to Rakis. Odrade recognizes the plan as swift, calculated punishment.
Evaluating corpses from the attack, Odrade confirms that new Face Dancers are active—harder to detect but still marked by unique pheromones. To protect this edge, she silently orders the eavesdroppers identified through the ventilator eliminated. An acolyte later reports four priests—Tuek’s minions—were listening and are dead.
Meanwhile, Odrade manages Sheeana’s volatility. Sheeana demands to learn Voice and validation of her divine status, boasting that the priests obey her and that the worms spare her. Odrade counters with measured honesty and discipline, refusing to be commanded and probing Sheeana’s claims while noting the girl’s natural, intermediate Voice and aristocratic confidence.
When Sheeana pushes too far, Odrade applies full Voice, freezing and then calming the girl, establishing authority. With control reaffirmed, Odrade positions Sheeana for deliberate Bene Gesserit training while the broader punitive strategy against Guild, Ix, and the Tleilaxu moves into motion.
