Chapter 30

Near dusk, a worm carries Odrade, Sheeana, and Waff to the shattered base of the Sareer wall. Sheeana senses the worm wants them off, and it departs once they dismount. Investigating a fissure, the trio is swept by sliding sand into a vast cavern where Odrade identifies Fremen catchbasins—Sietch Tabr. ’Thopters arrive above with light and plans for a rope rescue.

Driven by a powerful danger sense, Odrade leaves Sheeana to bar Waff and ascends interior stairs. She passes desert-mummified bodies from later violence, then reaches the immense gathering hall of Sietch Tabr, sensing immediate peril amid signs of ancient searches. On the dusty floor she finds “Arafel” burned into the rock, with an arrow pointing to previously cut ledges.

Guided by memory and the sunset marker’s former position, Odrade discovers a small adjacent room heavy with spice odor. A deeply etched Chakobsa “Here” at a threshold leads her to kick loose a mechanism; she tumbles into a concealed chamber braced against detection and filled with long tons of melange.

On the walls, Odrade reads Leto II’s inscriptions: a message to a future Reverend Mother bequeathing fear and loneliness, condemning the Sisterhood’s failure to build the Golden Path, and asking stark questions about Bene Gesserit alliances and ultimate purpose. The Tyrant’s words demand noble purpose beyond mere survival and hint that the Sisterhood could end as nothing more than a secret society.

Odrade recognizes the validation of Taraza’s grim strategy and the enduring peril the Golden Path addresses. She climbs out, concluding that wealth and power cannot substitute for purpose, and that their chosen tools—Sheeana and the ghola—must fulfill the demanding design or the Sisterhood may perish.
