Overview
Duncan Idaho trains under Miles Teg’s protection while scrutinized by Lucilla and Schwangyu. A childhood incident—guards punished at Schwangyu’s order—sparks Duncan’s lasting hatred. Through restricted research, Duncan deduces he is a ghola and resolves to guard himself with silence. Geasa is removed and Tamalane installed, as Schwangyu briefs Lucilla on Duncan’s psychology and readiness.
Summary
In the Keep’s courtyard on Gammu, Duncan Idaho trains while covertly watching the parapet where Patrin and two Reverend Mothers—Schwangyu and the newly arrived Lucilla—observe him. He recalls Teg’s lessons on mobility, planetary defenses, and orbiting monitors and no-ships guarding the vulnerable world, recognizing that all of this protection is centered on him.
Memories surface of an early escape to a pillbox tunnel that led Schwangyu to punish an entire guard unit. Tamalane later explains Bene Gesserit “major punishments” as a cruel banquet ending in a false “dessert” that locks in the lesson. The aftermath severs Duncan’s camaraderie with the guards and ignites his enduring hatred of Schwangyu.
Driven to the archives, Duncan studies Gammu’s Harkonnen past, the Tyrant’s reign, Rakis, and suppressed reports from Dar-es-Balat. Told he is being prepared to live on Rakis, he probes deeper into accounts of gholas and axlotl tanks. At ten, he pieces together the silences and realizes: he is a ghola. Schwangyu intercepts his inquiries, offering evasions that sharpen his resolve to fight with silence and watchfulness.
Duncan questions his origins and the dangers surrounding him but receives only warnings and nonanswers. He commits to reclaiming his original memories someday. Shortly thereafter, his sympathetic instructor Luran Geasa is removed and replaced by the austere Tamalane, confirming to Duncan that he was not meant to learn so much so soon.
On the parapet, Schwangyu explains the transition to Lucilla, noting Duncan’s quick, defiant declaration of hatred to Tamalane and assessing his current thoughts about the “new young one.” Lucilla’s youth signals a new phase in his tutelage, while Bene Gesserit analysis frames the broader threat: enemies who destroy societies through subversion as effectively as with overt force.
