Chapter Forty-Six — Chapter 46
Overview
Conrad drives Jeremiah and friends to a bar and watches them get drunk. He overhears Jeremiah’s friends brag about Jeremiah’s Cabo hookup with Lacie during his relationship with Belly and that Jeremiah and Belly haven’t slept together. Enraged, Conrad tries to confront Jeremiah but finds him sick and instead walks out, escalating tensions before the wedding.
Summary
Conrad volunteers to be designated driver and takes Jeremiah, Steven, and Jeremiah’s friends Tom (Redbird) and Josh to a crowded bar. As the group gets rowdy, Steven checks in about the wedding. Conrad deflects, ordering drinks but staying sober while the others take shots and dance.
While Steven dances, Conrad hears Josh joke that Jeremiah will finally “close with Belly,” revealing Jeremiah and Belly haven’t had sex. Josh and Tom then brag about Jeremiah’s spring break hookup with Lacie in Cabo, describing it crudely and confirming it happened while Jeremiah was with Belly.
The revelations ignite Conrad’s anger—at Jeremiah’s friends for crowing about it and at Jeremiah for betraying Belly. He storms toward the bathroom to confront Jeremiah, but finds Jeremiah inside, drunk and vomiting.
Unable to have a real confrontation, Conrad abandons the attempt. He leaves the bar for the parking lot, his fury unresolved and the threat of a coming reckoning hanging over the wedding plans.
