Chapter Eleven
Overview
After days of hurt, Belly invites Jeremiah over. Confronted with her mistrust, Jeremiah proposes, pledging change and lifelong commitment. Belly accepts, and together they envision an immediate future—living off campus and telling their families—framing marriage as a way to move past his betrayal and redefine their relationship.
Summary
Belly, missing Jeremiah despite her pain, calls him to come over, intending to see him face-to-face to move forward. When Jeremiah arrives, her hurt resurfaces, and she questions how she could ever trust him again.
Fearing he might leave, Jeremiah instead kneels and proposes, offering a ring and a promise to earn back her trust. He paints a future together—an apartment off campus, shared routines, and steadfast love—arguing their story has always been theirs alone.
Belly challenges his motives, suspecting he wants to erase the betrayal through marriage. Jeremiah insists the crisis clarified his certainty that he never wants to be without her. When he asks if she still loves him, Belly admits she does, and warns he can never hurt her like that again.
Moved by his earnestness and her own memories of their history, Belly offers her hand. Jeremiah places the ring on her finger and formally asks her to marry him. She says yes, and they embrace, believing love and commitment can carry them through the aftermath.
That night, they make concrete plans—where to live and how to tell their parents—and silently agree to leave the recent past behind, committing fully to a shared future.
