Chapter Twenty-Eight
Overview
Conrad lures Jeremiah out to surf to question the sudden wedding and the fallout with Laurel. Jeremiah rejects Conrad’s concerns and orders him to stay out of it. The confrontation heightens the brothers’ rift and exposes Conrad’s jealousy and helplessness, reinforced by a remembered promise to look after Jeremiah.
Summary
Conrad invites Jeremiah to surf so they can speak privately after Jeremiah’s public engagement announcement. Floating on their boards, Conrad tests the waters by asking how angry Laurel is and learns she and Belly had a big fight.
Conrad then asks what their father thinks and argues the marriage is premature: they are still in college and Jeremiah has no job. Jeremiah bristles, tells Conrad to stay out of it, and insists the decision is between him and Belly.
Jeremiah catches the next wave and rides to shore, leaving Conrad stewing in the lineup. Conrad’s anger flares—he wants to fight—but he restrains himself.
Left alone, Conrad admits to himself that Jeremiah is marrying the girl Conrad loves. He resolves not to interfere because Jeremiah is his brother and because of a remembered promise to take care of him, leaving Conrad conflicted, jealous, and helpless.
