Chapter Fifty-Seven

Overview

Jeremiah returns and confronts Belly about her lingering love for Conrad, demanding her whole heart. Belly admits she still loves Conrad but chooses Jeremiah; Jeremiah says that isn’t enough. After revealing Susannah’s letter meant for Conrad, Jeremiah refuses to be her excuse, and they call off the wedding.

Summary

Jeremiah arrives before the ceremony, outwardly calm but edged, signaling the wedding might proceed. Belly, shaken by his earlier disappearance, tries to talk; Jeremiah resists and pushes for intimacy and certainty, accusing Belly of holding back and treating him as second to Conrad.

Pressed to be honest, Belly cannot deny her lingering love. When Jeremiah demands a clear answer, Belly finally says yes—she still loves Conrad—but insists she chooses Jeremiah. Jeremiah rejects the idea of getting only part of Belly’s heart, saying it isn’t enough.

Jeremiah reveals Susannah accidentally sent him a letter intended for Conrad, noting Susannah only saw Conrad truly in love once—with Belly. He refuses to be the reason Belly avoids confronting her feelings for Conrad, warning Conrad will let her down but acknowledging his own blame for proposing despite knowing the truth.

Recognizing the gravity of the moment, both accept that marrying would be wrong. The rain never comes, but the wedding does not happen. Belly reflects that, despite their good intentions and love, she and Jeremiah were not meant to be.
