Chapter Forty-Six — Chapter 56
Overview
Belly recalls a Valentine’s night at sixteen when Conrad surprised her with a blanket, cocoa, and stargazing outside her house. Sharing constellations and quiet intimacy, Conrad admits he may never trust another girl like her. The memory crystallizes their bond and the symbol of “infinity” that defines their connection.
Summary
On a Valentine’s Day when Belly is sixteen and Conrad eighteen, Belly expects no celebration, assuming Conrad isn’t the flowers-and-candy type. After a typical school day of classmates receiving roses, she settles into homework.
Conrad texts her to look out the window; Belly finds him waiting on a plaid blanket in her yard with a thermos and Twinkies. Thrilled, she races outside in pajamas and a coat. They lie under a full moon as Conrad shares cocoa and points out constellations, telling the myths behind Orion and Cassiopeia. Belly savors his voice and the wonder he brings to science and the night sky.
When Belly vows not to go in until they see a shooting star, Conrad gently notes they might not, but they keep watching. He warms her hands and talks about “interplanetary dust.” Belly describes feeling the sky’s vastness as infinite, and Conrad says he might never trust another girl the way he trusts her. They never see a shooting star, yet both mark the night as a top moment—an intimate memory that, in Belly’s words, felt like he gave her “the moon and the stars. Infinity.”
