Chapter Two
Overview
The narrator heads to Jeremiah’s fraternity party alone, reflecting on summer plans, last year’s missed trips to Cousins, and the bittersweet end of the school year. Jeremiah surprises her en route, and their playful, intimate walk underscores their easy closeness as they anticipate returning home and coordinating her move.
Summary
With the school year ending and a fraternity party ahead, the narrator feels bittersweet about leaving Finch and the routines she shares with Jeremiah. She reviews their summer plans: Jeremiah will intern at his dad’s company, she will waitress at Behrs, and they hope to visit the Cousins beach house after a previous summer spent working and missing it.
Walking to the party alone in uncomfortable heels after friends are unavailable, the narrator texts Jeremiah that she’s on her way. He surprises her by waiting on her favorite bench, compliments her borrowed sundress, and jokes that it’s like The Sound of Music, which makes her self-conscious but pleased.
After brief greetings from passersby, the narrator admits her feet hurt. Jeremiah offers a piggyback, and they cross the lawn playfully as they discuss logistics for her dad’s arrival to help her move. Jeremiah jokes about having to help after carrying her, and their teasing ends with her blowing a raspberry on his neck, both laughing as they head to the party.
