Chapter Three
Overview
At Jeremiah’s raucous frat party, Belly navigates the sorority scene she’s avoided and meets Lacie, who’s rumored to like Jeremiah but proves friendly. Conversation about travel underscores Belly and Jeremiah’s future plans, and Belly’s private reflections crystallize her certainty that Jeremiah is her person.
Summary
Belly arrives at Jeremiah’s fraternity house and takes in the chaotic, summer-themed party. She declines borrowing a swimsuit and notes the heavy Zeta Phi presence, recalling her choice not to rush despite Jeremiah’s interest and Taylor’s stereotypes about sororities.
Upstairs to drop her bag and back down, Belly spots Lacie Barone, Zeta Phi’s social chair, talking to Jeremiah. Belly joins them, hears Lacie will study in Paris, and Jeremiah mentions their hoped-for backpacking trip. Belly downplays her French, and Lacie proves warm, softening Belly’s assumptions.
After Lacie leaves, Jeremiah seats Belly to fetch her a drink. As he moves through the crowd, Belly reflects on their history—childhood closeness, shared intimacies, and his small acts of care—recalling his whiteboard note, “YOU ARE THE MILK TO MY SHAKE.”
These memories and their future talk solidify Belly’s conviction that their relationship is right. Confident despite campus attention on Jeremiah, she concludes he is the one for her.
