1. Ryan
Overview
Ryan Shay, newly voted captain of Chicago’s NBA team, clashes with teammates over preseason intensity and wrestles with leadership beyond talent. Stevie asks him to house her friend Indy, who may leave Chicago without help. Ryan reluctantly agrees with conditions, signaling personal compromise alongside professional pressure.
Summary
Ryan Shay, a disciplined Chicago Devils point guard, extends preseason practice, frustrated by teammates’ conditioning. Ethan Jeong counsels Ryan to earn respect as a leader beyond his play. Despite a unanimous vote making him captain, Ryan worries about communication and carrying the team toward a long-sought championship.
After practice, Ryan keeps shooting with an intern, Casey, until his twin sister Stevie arrives and takes over rebounding. Their easy rapport reveals Ryan’s trust in her and his intense routine, even as Stevie teases him about her happy relationship with hockey player Evan Zanders.
Stevie asks a favor: let her friend Indy stay in Ryan’s large apartment so Indy can keep her Chicago job after a breakup and financial strain. Ryan refuses, guarding his private home life and routine.
When Stevie walks out disappointed, Ryan follows. Hearing how much Indy’s stability—and Stevie’s friendship—matter, Ryan relents. He agrees on strict terms: a defined move-out date, a simple agreement, and rent at an affordable rate. Stevie is relieved, and Ryan returns to finish his free throws, acknowledging the personal compromise for his sister’s sake.
