43. Ryan

Overview

Ryan leaves his fan-swarmed building, confiding in his doorman that he bought a peaceful house for Indy. Before a pivotal game, he drops his media mask, admitting the crushing pressure and reclaiming joy in basketball.

He then confesses to GM Ron that his relationship began as a ruse; Ron laughs, supports him, and reaffirms Ryan’s place in Chicago.

Summary

In his lobby, Ryan and longtime doorman David watch a crowd of fans gathered after the Devils’ big win. Ryan reveals he bought a house outside the city for Indy and won’t move in unless she wants him there. David urges him to seek a life with peace, reinforcing what the house symbolizes.

Driving to the facility, Ryan reflects on missing Indy and regretting his reaction to thinking she was pregnant. He believes they still want each other and hopes she invites him to share the new home.

At a pregame press conference with Ethan and their coach flanking him, Ryan initially deflects questions about pressure and legacy. Then he chooses candor, admitting he feels constant pressure, resented the game for years, and tried to be a machine by isolating himself. He declares this season fun again and commits to playing freely regardless of outcome.

Afterward, Ryan stops GM Ron Morgan to apologize if his honesty causes issues. Ron praises the vulnerable Ryan he first scouted and dismisses trade fears, calling Ryan the best point guard and valuing joy and culture over the scoreboard.

Ryan then confesses that his relationship with Indy began as a staged act to convince Ron he’d softened. Ron laughs, revealing his wife Caroline suspected it all along, and says the ruse became real because Ryan changed for love. Ron reaffirms he won’t trade Ryan and expects continued off-court connection, with dinners through the summer. Ryan leaves buoyed, hoping to host with Indy—together.
