4. Indy

Indy wakes in her sunny new room, texts Stevie about the space and Ryan, and follows the smell of coffee to the kitchen. Ryan has made breakfast, an unexpected olive branch after their tense first night. They trade barbs over her iced coffee preference, vegetarianism, and her “basic” tastes, and she probes Ryan’s sparse social life and his preference for solitude.

When Indy keeps teasing, Ryan turns the questions on her and asks about her ex. Indy reveals she dated Alex for six years, grew up with him, and found him cheating in their bed. Ryan reacts with clenched restraint and blunt advice: love is black and white and she needs to move on. The exchange exposes mutual vulnerability, and Ryan replaces the “Indiana” nickname with “Blue” after learning her full name is Indigo.

Ryan adapts her coffee with ice and milk, then proposes a written, temporary lease. He offers a generous $500 monthly rent on the condition she saves another $500 toward her own place. He adds rules: no guests—especially no overnight strangers—citing his need for privacy as a highly recognizable athlete, plus quiet returns and general neatness. Indy promises to honor the boundary.

Charged banter flickers when Indy asks where he entertains guests and Ryan pointedly confirms he doesn’t have overnight company there. After they both sign, Ryan posts the agreement on the fridge. As Indy seeks more time together, Ryan retreats for practice, leaving a mix of new structure, guarded attraction, and her renewed awareness of loneliness.
