Chapter 25.

Overview

Edmond Dantès secures and transports the Spada treasure to a secreted yacht, establishing wealth and mobility. He sends Jacopo to learn of his past, then returns to Marseilles incognito as Lord Wilmore, confirming his father’s death and Mercédès’s disappearance. Dantès reclaims his father’s rooms and quietly aids local fishermen before departing, fully committed to his concealed rebirth.

Summary

At dawn on Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantès conceals the treasure grotto, pocketing gems and masking all traces. When The Young Amelia returns, he feigns lingering injury, hears of a narrow escape from a guard-ship, and sails to Leghorn. There, he discreetly sells small diamonds to a jeweler, raising ample funds without arousing suspicion.

Dantès gifts Jacopo a new boat and money, inventing an inheritance to explain his means, and sends him to Marseilles to inquire after Louis Dantès and Mercédès. He declines further service with The Young Amelia and travels to Genoa, where he impulsively purchases a swift yacht and commissions hidden compartments.

Sailing alone to Monte Cristo, Dantès transfers the entire hoard into the yacht’s secret lockers. After a week mastering the vessel, he receives Jacopo’s report: his father is dead and Mercédès has disappeared. Controlling his grief, Dantès takes on two sailors and sets course for Marseilles to investigate personally.

Arriving under an English passport as Lord Wilmore, Dantès tests his anonymity with a former Pharaon sailor, who fails to recognize him and is rewarded for his honesty. Overwhelmed by memories, Dantès visits his late father’s former rooms, now occupied by newlyweds, and silently mourns where his father died. Learning Caderousse has become an innkeeper near Beaucaire, he then buys the entire house under his alias, relocating tenants to reclaim the top rooms.

That evening, Dantès visits the Catalans, discreetly asks after long-departed residents, and later donates a fully equipped fishing boat to a family. Without revealing himself, he issues orders to his sailor and departs Marseilles on horseback by the Porte d’Aix, resolved in his concealed new identity and future designs.
