Chapter 2.
Overview
Dantès reunites with his impoverished father and restores his finances, then refuses to doubt Mercédès despite Caderousse’s insinuations. After Dantès leaves for the Catalans, Caderousse and Danglars, both resentful of his expected promotion, discuss potential trouble regarding Mercédès and decide to wait at La Réserve for developments.
Summary
Edmond Dantès rushes to his father’s modest room and surprises him with an embrace. He shares the news of Captain Leclère’s death and his likely promotion with M. Morrel’s support. When Dantès notices there is no wine or provisions, he learns his father repaid Caderousse from Edmond’s savings, leaving himself nearly destitute.
Shaken, Dantès pours his money on the table and insists his father buy what he needs, promising better days ahead. Caderousse arrives, eyeing the coins, and trades pleasantries. He needles Dantès about refusing Morrel’s dinner, hints that flattery helps careers, then steers the talk to Mercédès, suggesting she has many admirers and implying trouble if Dantès is not quickly made captain.
Confident in Mercédès’ fidelity, Dantès departs to visit the Catalans. Caderousse lingers, then meets Danglars outside to report that Dantès speaks as if his captaincy were decided and had even offered him help, which they both resent.
Danglars, jealous and hostile, hints Dantès could be held back or reduced. Caderousse mentions seeing Mercédès with a formidable “cousin,” predicting a storm in that quarter. They go to La Réserve to drink and wait for news, where Père Pamphile confirms Dantès passed by toward the Catalans.
