Chapter 19.
Overview
Faria intensifies his instruction on the Spada treasure, compelling Edmond Dantès to memorize the directions, while repairs to the prison thwart escape. Faria suffers a third, fatal seizure. Dantès’ desperate remedies fail as officials certify the death and prepare a night burial. Dantès is left grieving but poised to act.
Summary
Abbé Faria exalts the Spada treasure’s potential, now valuing it as Dantès’ future. Dantès, recalling his oath of vengeance, doubts the hoard still exists but learns every instruction. He sketches Monte Cristo and receives detailed guidance for recovery. Meanwhile, the sea-side gallery is rebuilt and their tunnel sealed, closing their escape route.
Resigned, Dantès praises the true “treasure” of Faria’s teachings. Faria, paralyzed but lucid, drills Dantès to memorize the letter and survival plans once free: reach Monte Cristo, hide suspicions, and search the farthest angle of the second opening. Their daily routine masks unspoken fears.
One night Faria calls; a third seizure grips him. Dantès vows to save him again, administering the red elixir—first twelve drops, then the remainder. The convulsions subside into stillness. Despite Dantès’ vigil, Faria’s heart stops at dawn. Terror and grief overtake Dantès as he hides the lamp and reseals the passage.
Jailers, soldiers, and the governor arrive. A doctor clinically confirms death, then orders a heated iron to fulfill legal formalities, branding the heel. They mock Faria’s “treasure” and prepare his interment, placing the body in a sack. With the chaplain absent, the burial is set for that evening.
After the officials depart and the dungeon falls silent, Dantès reenters Faria’s cell. Alone with his mentor’s shrouded body and the knowledge seared into memory, Dantès stands at a turning point, grief-stricken yet ready to transform loss into opportunity.
