Chapter 67.

Overview

Madame Danglars meets Villefort in secret. Villefort reveals the Auteuil grave was empty when he returned a year later and concludes their child likely lived and was taken to a foundling hospital, then reclaimed and lost. Fearing exposure, they suspect Monte Cristo knows and Villefort vows to unmask him.

Summary

Madame Danglars, veiled and discreet, visits Procureur Villefort at his office. After securing privacy, Villefort frames their past as an inescapable trace and prepares her for worse news than the prior night’s shock at Auteuil.

Villefort reveals that Monte Cristo found neither chest nor child beneath the trees because nothing was there. He recounts returning to Auteuil a year after the birth, reopening and expanding the grave site through the night and dawn, and discovering the chest gone. Reasoning that the Corsican assailant could not have kept a corpse a year, Villefort concludes the child may have been alive and removed.

Driven by guilt and fear, Villefort describes searching the foundling hospital, where on the night of September 20 a child arrived wrapped in half a napkin marked with a baron’s crown and the letter H. Six months later, a woman reclaimed the infant with the matching half; agents traced her to Châlons and then lost all track. Madame Danglars is devastated by the possibility she had buried her child alive; Villefort stresses that if the child lives, someone holds their secret.

They fear Monte Cristo’s knowledge after his pointed remarks about a disinterred child. Villefort presses Madame Danglars about any disclosures, journals, or sleep-talking, then vows to discover within a week who Monte Cristo is and why he speaks of their buried past. He warns her against everyone—especially the count—and escorts her out discreetly.
