Chapter 84.
Overview
Paris gossips about the failed robbery while Andrea’s marriage to Eugénie approaches, despite her dislike. Beauchamp returns from Yanina with legal attestations proving Fernand’s betrayal of Ali Pasha. Albert, devastated, destroys the proofs to protect his family’s honor, confirms his broken engagement, and turns to Monte Cristo.
Summary
Paris fixates on the attempted robbery at Monte Cristo’s house; Benedetto is named Caderousse’s killer, but the police cannot find him. Society attention shifts to the imminent Andrea–Eugénie marriage, which Danglars embraces though Eugénie resists. Villefort prepares the case; Bertuccio grows anxious at Benedetto’s name.
As Beauchamp’s investigative delay ends, Albert still smolders over the newspaper insult about his father. Beauchamp arrives unexpectedly and, after insisting on certainty before bloodshed, reveals he has traveled to Yanina to verify the rumor.
Beauchamp presents sworn attestations naming Fernand Mondego as the officer who sold Ali Pasha’s fortress. Confronted with undeniable proofs, Albert collapses in grief. Beauchamp offers to suppress the scandal; Albert tears and burns the documents, vowing eternal friendship and admitting he might have fled or died if the truth became public.
Haunted by his father’s dishonor and his mother’s potential suffering, Albert despairs but steels himself to conceal emotion until the crisis breaks. He confirms his engagement to Eugénie is already broken. Seeking composure, Albert and Beauchamp go out and decide to visit Monte Cristo, whose tactful reserve they hope will steady Albert.
