Chapter 55.
Overview
Major Bartolomeo Cavalcanti arrives, bearing Abbe Busoni’s letter, and Monte Cristo smoothly supplies forged proofs of lineage and funds, scripting the major’s backstory. The count confirms Andrea’s presence, arranges a private reunion, and coaches the major on manners, clothing, and the official narrative—cementing a crucial pawn in his Parisian designs.
Summary
At seven, Major Bartolomeo Cavalcanti arrives at Monte Cristo’s house. Monte Cristo greets him as prearranged by the Abbe Busoni’s letter, confirming the major’s identity, supposed noble lineage, and large income. The major anxiously fixates on the letter’s financial postscript, and Monte Cristo assures payment, establishing immediate leverage.
Over wine, Monte Cristo leads the major through a fabricated past: a hidden marriage to Oliva Corsinari and a lost son, Andrea, stolen in childhood. When the major lacks proof, Monte Cristo produces a marriage certificate and baptismal record, instructing the major to guard them and adopt a credible French explanation (provincial schooling and a duplicitous tutor) instead of a gypsy abduction tale.
Monte Cristo verifies that the Marchesa is dead, smoothing any complications, and scripts the major’s recent life at Via Reggio. He warns that French society demands documents for identity and marriage prospects, tying the success of Andrea’s future to these forgeries.
Monte Cristo reveals Andrea is already in the house and promises a private reunion, predicting “the voice of nature” may be faint yet unmistakable. He advances 8,000 francs on a 48,000-franc credit, deepening the major’s dependence, and declines a receipt, invoking trust between “honest men.”
Before withdrawing, Monte Cristo coaches the major on attire and presentation, claiming his luggage and uniforms await at the Hotel des Princes. He exits to prepare Andrea, leaving the major dazzled and fully inducted into the crafted identity that will serve the count’s broader plot.
