Chapter 54.
Overview
Albert and Lucien Debray call on Monte Cristo, discussing Albert’s reluctant engagement to Eugénie Danglars and the Danglars’ risky stock speculations. Monte Cristo arranges a dinner at Auteuil for the Danglars and Villeforts while tactfully excluding the Morcerfs, and announces an evening meeting with Major Bartolomeo Cavalcanti and his son Andrea. After Albert leaves, Monte Cristo orders extensive preparations at Auteuil, signaling a calculated plan in motion.
Summary
Albert de Morcerf and Lucien Debray visit Monte Cristo. Albert thanks him on Madame Danglars’s behalf and confides his reluctance to marry Eugénie, citing his mother’s disapproval. Monte Cristo probes Albert’s doubts, noting the tension between pleasing Fernand (the count) and protecting Mercédès.
Conversation shifts to finance as Debray calculates Danglars’s recent windfall and sudden losses in Haitian bonds, hinting that Madame Danglars speculates boldly. Albert teasingly suggests Debray could curb her by leaking misleading “official” news, which unsettles Debray and hastens his departure.
Monte Cristo proposes a dinner at his Auteuil house for the Danglars and Villefort families but, to avoid fanning marriage expectations, excludes the Morcerfs. Albert agrees to create a credible absence by taking Mercédès to the seaside. When Albert invites Monte Cristo to dine with them instead, Monte Cristo declines, citing a prior engagement.
Monte Cristo then reveals that he is to receive Major Bartolomeo Cavalcanti and the major’s son, Andrea, whom he will introduce into Parisian society. They briefly touch on Franz d’Épinay’s engagement to Valentine de Villefort and Albert’s own unwanted match with Eugénie, before Albert departs.
Alone, Monte Cristo summons Bertuccio to prepare Auteuil for Saturday’s dinner, ordering new hangings except in the red-damask bedroom, and a thorough alteration of the yard. He concludes that “Lucullus dines with Lucullus,” keeping his guest list—and intentions—opaque while setting the stage for upcoming moves.
