Chapter 51.
Overview
Maximilian rents the adjoining lot as a “gardener” to secure discreet meetings with Valentine. They confess love but confront barriers: Villefort’s authority, Madame de Villefort’s envy, and Valentine’s engagement to Franz. Noirtier subtly favors Maximilian. Their tryst ends when Valentine is summoned to meet the Count of Monte Cristo, startling Maximilian.
Summary
In the secluded rear garden of the Villefort mansion, Valentine waits at a boarded iron gate, where Maximilian Morrel arrives disguised in a workman’s blouse. He reveals he has rented the adjacent disused kitchen-garden as a “gardener,” paying 500 francs a year, so he can safely approach and speak with Valentine.
Valentine cautions against the risks and their limited strength against her father’s will and her stepmother’s vigilance. Maximilian reaffirms his respectful restraint and devotion, asking only for hope. Valentine confides her isolation: her father’s indifference, Madame de Villefort’s hostility fueled by inheritance issues and favoritism for Edward, and the burden of her engagement to Franz d’Epinay.
They discuss politics and family history. Valentine recounts Villefort and Danglars reacting sharply to Maximilian’s name, and Noirtier signaling approval of Maximilian’s Legion of Honor mention, highlighting the father–grandfather political divide. Maximilian argues his honorable prospects and vows patience, while Valentine, recalling her late mother and Marseilles ties, remains fearful of Villefort’s power.
Footsteps approach; Maximilian feigns weeding. A servant calls Valentine inside to receive a grand visitor: the Count of Monte Cristo. Valentine departs, and Maximilian, startled by the Count’s name and connection to Villefort, wonders how Monte Cristo knows her family.
