Chapter 100.

Overview

Valentine, still weak, endures delirious nights until the Count of Monte Cristo secretly appears, revealing he has been guarding her through a hidden door and replacing poison with antidote. He confirms a poisoner in the house, credits Noirtier’s precautions, and instructs Valentine to feign sleep to catch the culprit at midnight.

Summary

Valentine remains bedridden and mentally clouded, learning faintly of Eugénie’s flight and Benedetto’s arrest. Her days are structured by Noirtier’s constant presence, Villefort’s visits, d’Avrigny’s nightly draught, and a nurse who locks the room. Despite precautions, Valentine suffers feverish visions each night.

Near midnight, after the nurse departs, Valentine sees a figure emerge silently from her library door. Expecting a hallucination, she hesitates to drink her medicine. The visitor tests the liquid, sips it, and then tells her it is safe. Speaking at last, he reveals himself as the Count of Monte Cristo.

Monte Cristo reassures Valentine he has watched over her for four nights from a neighboring house he rented, entering only to replace a poisoned draught with a restorative. For Maximilian Morrel’s sake, he promises her life. Valentine, torn between fear and gratitude, accuses him of intrusion; he answers that he has only observed visitors, food, and drink to protect her.

Pressed by Valentine, Monte Cristo confirms he has seen the poison poured and reminds her of previous victims—M. and Mme de Saint-Méran and Barrois—while noting Noirtier’s regimen has partially inoculated her. He explains a deadlier agent was used four days earlier, but his antidote saved her.

Monte Cristo asks if Valentine has noticed nocturnal intruders; she recalls shadowy figures she had dismissed as delirium. He declares she is lucid tonight and that midnight, the murderer’s hour, is at hand. He instructs her to feign sleep, warns her to remain silent and still, and withdraws through the hidden door to spring the trap.
