Chapter 99.
Overview
Madame Danglars seeks to shield her family from scandal by begging Villefort to spare or delay prosecution of Benedetto. Villefort, consumed by duty and personal grief, refuses and exalts the law over mercy. News then arrives that Benedetto has been arrested at Compiègne, sealing the public reckoning.
Summary
After Eugénie Danglars and Louise d’Armilly flee, Madame Danglars, desperate to end her burdensome guardianship and scandal, first seeks Lucien Debray for help but finds him absent and indifferent. She returns home, assumes Eugénie is in her room, and spends the night dreading the public disgrace from Andrea Cavalcanti’s exposure.
At dawn, Madame Danglars decides only Gérard de Villefort can contain the scandal. She goes to his grief-stricken, guarded house, where the staff treat her with fearful caution. In Villefort’s study, she pleads for mercy or at least a delay for Andrea—now unmasked as Benedetto—to protect her family’s honor.
Villefort, hardened by recent family tragedies, rejects appeals to sentiment and declares himself the embodiment of the law. He insists Benedetto is not merely an impostor but an assassin, and vows that once criminals are known, they must die. Madame Danglars presses for postponement until Eugénie can marry safely, but Villefort refuses.
As she argues that allowing flight would be a humane inaction, a dispatch arrives: Benedetto has been arrested at Compiègne. Villefort, grimly satisfied, sees the case completing his assize session. Madame Danglars, pale and defeated, departs, her hopes of shielding her family’s reputation extinguished.
