Overview
Rain of Shadows and Endings is a dark fantasy set in Devram, a world shaped by ancient gods, divine bloodlines, and the uneasy dependence between the powerful Legacy and the Fae created to sustain them. During a rare Selection, Tessalyn Ausra, a Fae who expects to be overlooked, is chosen as Source by Theon St. Orcas, the formidable Arius Heir.
Their bond thrusts Tessa into a court of coercive magic, political schemes, and brutal expectations. Theon needs her obedience, power, and public loyalty, while Tessa fights to preserve autonomy, friendship, and selfhood in a system designed to strip those things away. Around them, rival kingdoms, hidden lineages, and old divine forces begin to stir.
The novel centers on control, survival, identity, trauma, and the dangerous intimacy of forced bonds. Its conflict is both personal and political: Tessa must endure a bond she never chose while discovering what kind of power she may hold, and Theon must decide what he is willing to become in pursuit of dominance and freedom from his father.

The story opens with a creation myth: from Chaos come the First gods, including Achaz, god of beginnings, and Arius, god of endings. Their descendants create realms, demigods, and eventually the Legacy, divine-blooded families whose power becomes dangerous enough that an accord confines them to one world. The Fae are made to balance and feed Legacy magic, gifted with long lives and elemental abilities but structurally bound to serve.
In Devram, Tessalyn Ausra attends a rare all-kingdom Selection hoping she and her friends will be ignored. Instead, the intimidating Legacy who cornered her in a corridor is revealed as Theon St. Orcas, the Arius Heir, and he shocks the hall by selecting Tessa as his Source. Theon immediately begins the pre-bond: he explains the bond as necessary, injects her with tonic to crack her magical shields, and uses Entrancement to force compliance. Tessa resists from the beginning, trying to contact Dex and escape through a window, but Luka Mors intercepts her and returns her for the first Mark.
The first Mark is a painful blood rite overseen by a Priestess. Theon forces elixir into Tessa, mingles their blood, and brands her with the Arius symbol, locking their powers together. The aftermath leaves Tessa feverish, vomiting shadow and silver magic, and compelled toward Theon by pain when she pulls away. On the journey to Arius House, their dynamic hardens: Theon insists proximity and obedience are care, while Tessa experiences them as captivity. Luka repeatedly tempers Theon’s harshness but remains loyal to his plans.
At Arius House, Tessa meets Theon’s parents, Valter St. Orcas and Cressida. Valter treats her as a political asset and threatens that she could be loaned or used for breeding. Theon rejects that but remains possessive rather than liberating. As Tessa recovers, Theon confines her, controls food and movement, and pressures her to appear accepting. A formal dinner ends in humiliation when Theon makes her kneel to appease Valter. Tessa panics at a diamond choker she sees as a collar and resolves to flee. She escapes into the mountains, revealing an unusual ability to slip wards, but Theon tracks her with Kacela and Rigel and brings her back.
Valter’s pressure and Theon’s need for control intensify. Theon shows Tessa legal documents proving his complete dominion over her, while she insists their bond is coercion, not trust. When Metias and Pavil try to seize her under Valter’s authority, Axel warns her to run. Cornered in the gardens, Tessa panics and splits the earth with gold-lit power, summoning spectral warriors. Theon rescues her from the stables and realizes her fear has become linked to him through the bond. In a vision, Akira tells Tessa she summoned the Hunters and warns that Tessa will break and rise.
Valter orders a reevaluation at Rockmoor, where Priestess Zefira subjects Tessa to brutal Level Five testing. In an induced vision, Dagian Jove tortures her for information until an ash-born huntress appears. The testing reveals no clear element, but Zefira tells Theon that Tessa’s raw capacity is extraordinary and that her lineage records were likely falsified. Theon suppresses the results, forges a report with Tucker’s help, and plans tighter security and training. Tessa, meanwhile, seeks relief through alcohol, a brief connection with Tristyn Blackheart, and a stolen call to Dex, confessing she is not okay. Theon’s anger and coercive care culminate in a bargain: Tessa will publicly perform devotion to the bond in exchange for private autonomy and a promised call.
At the Acropolis, Theon reveals Arius’s larger ambitions and begins positioning Tessa as part of a fearsome public image. Luka is revealed as Theon’s sworn Guardian, a Sargon-blooded dragon shifter, and the group discusses Source Marks, Guardian bonds, Fae blood rations, and the Underground. Tessa is assigned Sources-only instruction, but her private instructor is Mother Cordelia, the abusive Estate Mother from her past. Cordelia retraumatizes her, and Tessa bolts to the river, where Night Children attempt to abduct her. Theon and Luka intervene; Theon executes the vampyres with nightstone and brings Tessa home, where she accepts his shadows as grounding comfort.
Tessa’s power continues to surface as crackling light, suggesting a binding is breaking. Theon, Luka, and Axel brand Tracking Marks on themselves and Tessa after the abduction attempt, and Theon admits his true aim is not to seize Devram but to kill Valter and claim the Underground. At a social, rival Sources try to extract Tessa’s element and reveal the cruelty of the Sirana breeding program. Tessa misleads them, then dances with Tristyn, who is revealed to be Legacy rather than mortal. He speaks cryptically of balance, chaos, and Tessa becoming the nightmare if she survives. Theon, furious but strategic, publicly claims Tessa through an intimate dance, then later confronts her. Their confrontation becomes sexual, deepening their attraction without resolving the question of coercion or belonging.
The court politics sharpen when Dagian and Lealla press Theon about Tristyn and threaten to expose Luka as a dragon. Valter arrives early, enraged by that exposure and by Tessa’s public contact. To discipline his sons, he has Eviana torture Pen, their longtime servant, until Axel mercy-kills her. Broken by grief and rage, Theon blames Tessa and locks her in a cellar overnight. The punishment shatters her remaining trust: by morning she is bloodied among broken glass, violet-rimmed, numb, and electrically charged with power.
On Emerging night, Axel unexpectedly claims Katya, who manifests rare fire magic, strengthening Arius. Tessa, emotionally hollow, is taken to her own ritual. A hooded Keeper interrupts and marks her; light, lightning, rain, and wind erupt, proving her power is not Fae. Axel tries to extract her, but Rordan Jove captures her with overwhelming Achaz light. At the Jove manor, Tessa sees Dex aligned with Achaz and learns from Rordan that she is not Fae or demi-Fae, and that Achaz blood may explain part of her power. Theon, forced to bargain with Valter for help, retrieves her but withholds the full cost.
Afterward, Tessa relives a vision of Theon killing her as a sacrifice to save the world. She tests Theon’s restraining bands and discovers she can remove them, deciding to hide that fact. Trusting no one, she vows to uncover every secret and become the storm others have tried to make of her. The final chapter shifts beyond Devram: Temural, god of the wild and untamed, asks Saylah for a way into the sealed world to protect his daughter. He reveals Akira placed the girl in Devram, Xan has gone missing, and Auryon has already seen the girl through a dream. Saylah directs him to the High Queen of the World Walkers, confirming that Tessa’s story is tied not only to Legacy politics but to hidden gods, missing guardians, and a larger cosmic design.

Rain of Shadows and Endings is built on a cosmic paradox: every beginning contains an ending, and every system made for balance breeds new forms of chaos. The prologue’s creation myth establishes a universe obsessed with equilibrium—gods, Legacy bloodlines, Fae Sources, and vows of noninterference—yet the chapters steadily reveal that “balance” is often the language power uses to justify control.
- Autonomy versus ownership. Tessa’s central struggle is the fight to remain a person in a world that legally and magically defines her as property. Theon’s Selection, the forced Marking, Entrancement, official documents naming him “Master,” and repeated public commands to kneel or perform obedience all dramatize institutionalized possession. Yet Tessa resists through escape attempts, bargains, withheld knowledge, and finally the decision to trust no one while rebuilding herself.
- Control disguised as protection.
