Chapter 63: Remembrance
Overview
On the eve of his swearing-in, Anden, newly elected to the Royal Council, visits the jadeless, detained Ayt Mada to deliver Kaul Niko’s decision: exile, not execution. Ayt accepts defeat and reflects on her legacy. Anden leaves with closure, returning to the Twice Lucky to rejoin family and the city’s enduring life.
Summary
Anden wins the Royal Council seat for Janloon Central, his past refusal of jade reframed as moral conviction. On the morning before his swearing-in, he visits a guarded safe house where a jadeless, aged Ayt Mada is held under Mountain custody.
Anden conveys Kaul Niko’s decision: Ayt will be exiled to Ygutan rather than executed, avoiding martyrdom and stabilizing new relations with the Kobens and Mountain remnants. Ayt derides Koben Ato’s avoidance and tests No Peak’s resolve, but Anden explains Niko’s dispassionate choice and lack of personal vengeance.
Presented with terms—two days to settle affairs, the option of suicide unopposed, and posthumous return to the Ayt family plot only if she abides—Ayt’s defiance gives way to weary acceptance. She acknowledges her time has passed, claiming only the bitter satisfaction that her grand vision helped create the future, if not as she intended.
Anden salutes her farewell, honoring a fallen enemy. Leaving the apartment, he walks through changing neighborhoods, feeling grief tempered by relief and love for Janloon’s endurance. He hails a taxi to the Twice Lucky; the driver reminisces about the restaurant and the clans, underscoring the city’s layered history.
Arriving at the Twice Lucky for brunch with family, Anden embraces continuity and closure as No Peak moves forward under Niko, with Ayt’s fate sealed by exile instead of blood.
