Chapter 51: Enough
Overview
Lula reports years of incriminating recordings on Art Wyles—his ascent to Espenia’s Foreign Trade secretary, ties to the Baker Street Crew, black-market jade, and Operation Firebreak links through Jim Sunto/GSI. Ayt Mada declares the evidence sufficient, releases Lula from her assignment, and calls an ally to set the plan in motion.
Summary
Lula meets Ayt Mada in the Pillar’s garden and presents the latest intelligence: Art Wyles has been approved to become Espenia’s secretary of Foreign Trade and will hand off Operation Firebreak dealings to Jim Sunto of GSI while retaining control of Anorco and influence in the Munitions Society.
Detailing Wyles’s covert arrangements, Lula explains he will continue laundering money for the Baker Street Crew, sell jade at fixed prices through them, and distance himself from Joren Gasson to hide their relationship. Lula’s evidence—transcripts from wiretaps and planted devices—corroborates years of criminal and political entanglements.
Lula reflects on seven years of exploitation and deep cover: seducing Wyles, feigning devotion and religious conversion, and enduring repeated assignments to secure actionable proof. The toll on her life and relationship with Sumi underscores her desperation for release.
Ayt Mada finally says the evidence is enough, dismisses Lula from further duty, and assures her Wyles will no longer call. As Lula departs in tears, Ayt phones “Iwe-jen” to make the planned arrangements, signaling the Mountain’s imminent move based on Lula’s work.
