Chapter 52: A Search Ended

Overview

Niko tracks down Catfish—Betin "Bero" Rotonodun—an Espenian ROE asset, securing testimony to support Shae’s probe into foreign covert operations. A midchapter interlude recounts Niko’s return, contrition, and steady rise inside No Peak. When Bero claims he killed Kaul Lan and tries to provoke execution, Niko rejects revenge, offers assistance, and redefines his place within the clan’s myth.

Summary

Niko visits a squalid Coinwash flat with two bodyguards and confronts Betin "Bero" Rotonodun, identified via declassified files as Catfish, an Espenian ROE informer on the CFM. Niko confirms Bero’s history and begins recording testimony for Shae’s effort to document ROE’s covert actions around the Janloon bombing.

The narrative looks back: after returning to Janloon, Niko publicly atoned for leaving, endured suspicion, and focused on work and study. He rose to Fist, began shadowing Master Luckbringer Terun Bin, and assisted Shae while attending Jan Royal. A travel montage reveals that, after quitting GSI and drifting abroad, Niko learned of Ru’s death via Teije Inno, spurring his reckoning and return.

Back in the flat, Niko finishes the interview, leaves payment, and offers Bero a one-day window for clan-arranged housing to rebuild his life. Bero, craving significance, fixates on Niko’s jade beads and claims he once wore them—boasting he shot Kaul Lan at the Docks and started the clan war—baiting Niko to kill him.

Niko coolly Deflects Bero to the floor but refuses violence, denying him a meaningful death. He states the Mountain killed Kaul Lan and refuses to dignify Bero’s claim or enact vengeance for spectacle. Leaving unsettled, Niko reflects on Kekon’s seductive myth of clans and jade, and on choosing a grounded, deliberate role within it.
