Chapter 9: The Seventh Discipline

Overview

Hilo tests and then recruits ex–Espenian Navy Angel Jim Sunto to modernize Kekon’s military training, countering the Mountain’s PR advantage with a tangible reform. At home, Wen’s attempt to repair their marriage erupts into a confrontation over trust and Tar’s decline, but Hilo returns, rejects divorce, and the couple recommits.

Summary

At the Seventh Discipline gym, Hilo observes Jim Sunto’s IBJCS style—efficient, jade-minimal, and disciplined. A sudden scuffle proves Sunto’s capability and composure, convincing Hilo he is legitimate. Hilo redirects the tension and invites Sunto to talk privately.

Over beers at the Two Tigers Taproom, Sunto recounts his Janloon origins, Espenian military career, injury, instructor work, and deliberate restraint with jade. Hilo, seeking tangible wins amid Mountain propaganda and national defense debates, proposes hiring Sunto to train Kekon’s forces in modern jade combat. Sunto, cautious but intrigued, agrees to meet General Ronu.

Hilo reflects on the Mountain’s media offensive and No Peak’s need for concrete achievements as he positions Sunto’s expertise as a strategic reform to bolster the army and No Peak’s standing.

That evening, Wen prepares an elaborate private dinner to mend their marriage. Conversation turns to Tar’s engagement to Iyn Ro and his fragile state, then to Wen and Shae’s past deception. When Wen asks if Hilo wants a divorce, Hilo erupts, accuses her of stealing trust, and storms out.

Cooling off in the car, Hilo confronts his isolation and the emptiness of stalemate. He returns, finds Wen asleep, carries her to bed, apologizes for leaving, forbids any talk of divorce, and emphasizes that both made mistakes out of love. They make determined, tentative love, signaling a hard-won recommitment.
