Chapter 3: Unreadable Clouds

Shae reels from the bloody end to the lunch with Fuyin Kan, blaming her misread while acknowledging Hilo’s sharper instincts. With Woon’s support, she quickly redirects to damage control: avoid a duel’s limits, buy out Fuyin’s heirs, and redistribute his company to loyal Lantern Men to quell dissent.

At headquarters, Hami Tumashon returns from Port Massy to a low-key celebration. He reports No Peak’s Espenian growth but highlights a serious constraint: jade illegality hampers staffing, travel, and sponsorships. Worse, Espenia may brand jade clans as criminal organizations, risking sanctions or expulsion despite Espenia’s own military jade purchases.

Hami opts to delay wearing jade while resettling and traveling, and accepts a newly created role as Rainmaker to align foreign operations and seek overseas growth. Shae affirms his value regardless of jade and welcomes him back.

After Hami leaves, Woon’s wife calls repeatedly; Woon confesses Kiya suffered another miscarriage. He admits the Shadow role strains their marriage and asks to transition to another position. Shae agrees to support the change once a replacement is found, even as the prospect underscores her reliance on Woon.

Left alone, Shae recognizes both the external threat of Espenian lawfare and internal vulnerabilities—Lantern Men unrest, key-personnel changes, and fraying family ties—intensifying her sense of solitude at the top.
