Chapter 39: The Stone-Eye Club

Overview

Ru begins university, grappling with Niko’s absence and mixed public attention as the Pillar’s stone-eye son. Seeking belonging, he joins the CSJN and befriends its brash leader, Dano, whose anti-clan views challenge Ru’s loyalties. Jaya’s suspicion forces Ru to keep the friendship quiet, sharpening his internal conflict over clan, identity, and change.

Summary

Ru arrives at Jan Royal University excited but saddened by Niko’s sudden departure to GSI and his silence. On campus, most ignore him, but some clan-connected people recognize him, including Mrs. Wan the librarian, who showers him with favors and asks him to relay respects to the Pillar. Ru resolves to represent his family well, even as he feels isolated.

Lonely, Ru attends a meeting of the Charitable Society for Jade Nonreactivity. Nervous about being the Pillar’s stone-eye son among stone-eyes and Abukei students, he introduces himself. Dano, the disheveled but energetic chapter leader, welcomes Ru warmly while joking he opposes everything No Peak stands for, signaling both acceptance and ideological challenge.

Ru and Dano quickly befriend each other. Dano’s activism across campus groups and his contrarian streak lead to spirited debates: Dano condemns the clans as obsolete power structures that marginalize nonreactives, while Ru defends the clans’ historic and ongoing role in protecting and modernizing Kekon. Their arguments harden Ru’s pride but also broaden his perspective.

When Ru tells Jaya about Dano, she brands him dangerous and hints at security scrutiny, alarming Ru. Remembering the Janloon bombing and rejecting extremism, Ru distinguishes Dano’s rhetoric from CFM violence and worries that fear of terrorists stifles needed reform talk. He decides to keep his friendship with Dano from Jaya, embracing a discreet path between loyalty to his clan and openness to change.
