Chapter 59: End of a Long Judgment
Overview
Shae visits Ayt Mada as the Mountain clan publicly rebels after Iyilo’s explosive interview links Ayt to smuggling and political manipulation. With Wyles indicted and Anorco’s sale halted, Shae urges Ayt to avoid civil war by resigning. Ayt relinquishes power, appointing Ayt Atosho as successor, opening a path to truce.
Summary
Shae travels to the Ayt mansion, passing a silent, unprecedented protest of Mountain Green Bones condemning their Pillar. She reviews breaking news: Jim Sunto, wired, secured Art Wyles’s confession, leading to Wyles’s indictment and the blocking of Anorco’s sale.
Inside, Ayt acknowledges No Peak’s coordinated blows—Six Hands Unity’s ruin, Iyilo’s televised confession, and the Espenian fallout. Iyilo’s interview details Ayt’s partnership with Ti Pasuiga and the barukan trade triangle, manipulation of Lukang, and complicity in proxy wars; Haedo Shield witnesses vouch for its truth. The Mountain fractures: prominent Lantern Men defect, allies renounce patronage, and warriors gather in protest. Iyilo is murdered soon after the broadcast.
Over tea, Shae argues that Ayt has lost control and that further bloodshed would destroy the clan. She offers a path: Ayt’s peaceful resignation, succession by Ayt Atosho, and No Peak’s pledge toward a lasting truce, with Hilo and Shae retiring within five years to end old grudges.
Ayt wrestles with pride and purpose but concedes the point. She steps outside before the assembled clan and publicly abdicates immediately, naming Ayt Atosho as Pillar and urging all Mountain members to pledge to him. Reporters shout as Ayt turns away, ending her long rule and averting civil war.
