Chapter 15: Skeptics
Overview
Anden treats First Fist Lott, then rushes to Espenia to champion legalizing jade medicine. After two grueling weeks of public demonstrations and a hostile hearing led by Dr. Gilspar, Assemblyman Sonnen moves the bill forward, and it passes by a slim margin. Immediately, Hilo sends Anden to Resville to thwart the Mountain’s expansion.
Summary
Working the toughest shifts in Paw-Paw, Anden treats an ambushed Lott Jin for internal bleeding, Channeling to seal vessels and stabilize him. Their awkward conversation revisits old ambitions: Lott rose for family and Hilo’s faith; Anden affirms his medical path despite doubts.
Anden receives urgent news from Dr. Martgen: Espenia will allow a live demonstration before voting on legalizing bioenergetic medicine. With Wen’s authorization, he recruits senior doctors Timo and Yon and flies to Adamont Capita, reflecting on clan debts and choosing to arrive rested.
In AC, Martgen and PR lead Rigly Hollin outline a high-visibility clinic demo with media and EPS observers. Over two weeks, Anden and colleagues treat hundreds—pain, vascular issues, tumors, and diagnostics—while fielding skepticism and cameras. Public praise grows alongside lines out the door, shifting some legislators and journalists to support.
Forty-eight hours before the vote, EPS forces a hearing. Dr. Gilspar attacks Anden’s clan ties and character, drawing rebukes from Chair Sonnen after an openly racist outburst. During recess, Hilo advises patience regarding Gilspar’s scandals but orders Anden to Resville to disrupt a Mountain foothold developing outside No Peak’s Port Massy strength.
Returning to the chamber, Anden hears Sonnen advance the bill to a full vote, praising Anden’s conduct and heritage. The National Assembly narrowly legalizes medical jade use. Even before the result is announced, Anden departs for Resville to initiate No Peak’s response against the Mountain in Espenia.
