Chapter 58: A Promise Kept
Overview
After the deadly Euman Island confrontation, Hilo corners Jim Sunto with evidence of GSI’s covert atrocities and looming public fury. He reveals Anorco’s impending sale to the Mountain and forces Sunto to help topple Art Wyles to save himself and sever GSI from Anorco, safeguarding No Peak’s position.
Summary
Jim Sunto arrives in Janloon furious over the Euman Island clash that left civilians and contractors dead. In Hilo’s suite, Sunto threatens legal and diplomatic retaliation, but Hilo counters that GSI fired first on civilians and that public outrage will end foreign mercenaries in Kekon.
Hilo unveils evidence of Operation Firebreak—recordings, documents, and testimony from Teije Inno—capable of igniting an Espenian political scandal. When Sunto dismisses it, Hilo reveals a greater threat: Art Wyles is selling Anorco to a private investor—the Mountain clan—binding GSI to Ayt Madashi unless Sunto acts.
Confronted with Wyles’s betrayal and the risk of prosecution, Sunto admits that proof of Wyles’s Crew ties could collapse his career and the sale. Hilo offers to bury the Firebreak evidence if Sunto helps bring down Anorco and Wyles, while accepting that GSI will be banned from Kekon and can no longer recruit from No Peak.
Weighing survival against loyalty, Sunto capitulates. Hilo sets the first step: Sunto must call Kelly Dauk, beginning a plan to fracture Anorco, implicate Wyles, and block the Mountain’s move.
