Chapter 50: Terrible Truths
Overview
Anden brings Hilo the news that Ru died in a clean-blade duel. Despite clan expectations of vengeance, Hilo orders no retaliation while facts are confirmed. The Kobens publicly abase themselves and offer ears, averting war. At Ru’s funeral, Niko returns contrite; Hilo stops his self-maiming and accepts him back.
Summary
Hilo wakes to late-night visitors and meets Anden, who struggles to speak before revealing that Ru was killed in a duel. Hilo, shattered, demands details. Anden recounts the hospital call, the Mountain Fists’ account, and his own Perception of no deceit, judging the death a tragic accident pending full investigation.
Expecting Kaul retribution, No Peak braces for violence, but Hilo convenes with Shae, Lott, and Anden and orders no attacks without approval. Interrogations find no plot; Dano is spared at Shae’s urging. The CFM appears spent, and Tadino’s provocation is deemed a desperate last gasp.
On the funeral morning, Councilwoman Koben Tin Bett and Ayt Ato arrive. Koben Ashi and two Fingers kneel and offer their severed ears, claiming they ended Ru’s killer and begging mercy. Hilo, momentarily on the edge of violence, accepts the ears in silence, signaling no war and preserving both clans’ aisho.
During the burial, Wen and Hilo confront their grief. Hilo bitterly laments raising a stone-eye amid Green Bones, wishing Ru had not dueled; Wen reaches for him, and they share the pain that even victories cost families dearly.
Niko then appears, older and haunted. He apologizes at Ru’s grave and kneels to Hilo, offering himself back to the clan. When Niko begins to cut off his ear, Hilo stops him, declares he never ceased being his son, and embraces him, choosing forgiveness over further blood and loss.
