Overview
Richards begins his first morning inside the Games Building under strict institutional control, moving from dormitory to bathroom to cafeteria by buzzer and I.D. check. The meal gives him temporary relief but also sharpens his fear for Sheila and Cathy, making the promised prize money feel both urgent and possibly illusory.
The chapter reinforces the dehumanizing machinery of the Games process while showing that Richards's motivation remains rooted in his family's immediate hunger and need.
Summary
At six the next morning, Ben Richards is woken by a loud buzzer. For a moment, he is disoriented and thinks of home, then remembers he is inside the Games Building process.
The applicants are moved in groups of fifty to an industrial bathroom, where they must show their cards to a camera watched by a policeman. Richards uses a small blue-tiled booth to shower, shave, and brush his teeth, surrounded by institutional supplies and warnings about respecting property.
The men are then sent to a cafeteria and checked again by I.D. card. Richards receives a heavy but cheap breakfast of cereal, potatoes, eggs, toast, milk, coffee, and substitutes, and he eats it quickly along with the others because real food has become rare in his life.
As Richards eats, thoughts of Sheila and Cathy return. Remembering the poor food and fake milk they may be living on, Richards grows desperate to know when the promised money will appear and briefly fears that the Games may be another empty lure. At the seven o'clock buzzer, the applicants are moved onward to the elevators.
