Overview
Richards turns Amelia’s hostage status into a public shield by calling a local news outlet and forcing the Network and police into a more visible confrontation. His wound, exhaustion, and desperation deepen the sense that Richards is losing options, but his tactical use of publicity temporarily changes the chase’s terms.
The chapter ends with Richards and Amelia driving north as sirens close in, while a witness captures photographic proof of their presence. The pursuit is no longer only a police hunt; it is becoming a live public spectacle that Richards hopes to manipulate for survival.
Summary
After reaching Gilly’s Town Line Store and Airstop, Ben Richards forces Amelia Williams out of the car at gunpoint when she refuses to move. Badly wounded and exhausted, Richards leans on Amelia as they shuffle toward the telephone booth, while the store’s elderly proprietor begs them to leave because he does not want trouble near his family.
Richards orders the proprietor back inside and calls the local news service through the operator. When the newsman initially thinks the call is a prank, Richards insists the report will soon be confirmed by police radio. The newsman checks and realizes that police are racing through Rockland after Richards.
Richards tells the newsman his location, identifies Amelia as his hostage, and demands that photographers and a Red Newsbreak be sent out immediately. Richards wants the public and the State Police to know Amelia is with him, because police at the previous roadblock fired on the car despite her presence. Richards claims he will kill Amelia if police shoot again, hoping the threat will force them to let him pass.
After hanging up, Richards returns to the car with Amelia’s help. Amelia warns that Richards is caught in madness and will be killed, but Richards only tells Amelia to drive north. As Amelia pulls back onto the road, the store owner photographs the scene with a Polaroid camera, and sirens begin to converge in the distance.
