…Minus 022 and COUNTING… When Holloway’s voice informed Richa

Overview

Richards uses maps to regain geographical certainty and actively redirects the hijacked jet south after it reaches the Canada-Vermont border. The exchange with Donahue reinforces Richards’s control over the crew and exposes Richards’s bitter awareness of class violence and privilege. McCone’s silent, intent stare keeps the threat of resistance alive despite Richards’s apparent command.

Summary

As Holloway announces that the jet is crossing from Canada toward Vermont, Richards asks for both physical and political maps of North America. Because Richards cannot see anything below except darkness and scattered lights, the maps become necessary for Richards to determine the plane’s position and choose the next direction.

When the navigator, Donahue, speaks up and suggests sending Amelia for the maps, Richards refuses to let the crew use Amelia as an errand-runner. Richards singles out Donahue by name and orders Donahue to bring the maps personally, reinforcing that Richards still controls the cabin.

Donahue delivers the maps and apologizes for speaking out. Richards studies Donahue and privately classifies Donahue as a wealthy, predatory young man from the city’s pleasure districts, which sharpens the chapter’s social hostility and Richards’s contempt for people insulated from the ghettos.

Richards identifies the political map, traces a line from Derry to the Canada-Vermont border, and estimates the jet’s location. Richards then orders Holloway to turn left, clarifies that he means due south, and reminds Holloway of the threat Richards has been using to keep the crew obedient.

Holloway complies and banks the plane. McCone remains hunched where he fell, staring at Richards with hungry intensity, showing that the standoff is still unstable even as Richards redirects the flight.
