After leaving the woods near an intersection, Ben Richards waits by the road and lets two cars pass because each contains two men. Feeling that the area is becoming dangerous and that police may arrive at any moment, Richards decides he must take the next safer opportunity.

When a car driven by a lone woman stops at the sign, Richards forces his way inside as it accelerates. Injured and grotesque-looking, Richards points his gun at the driver, using fear to establish control after she panics and slams on the brakes.

The woman identifies herself as Amelia Williams and begs Richards not to kill her. Richards calms her, tells her he does not intend to harm her, and rejects her assumption that he only wants to steal the car. Instead, Richards orders Amelia Williams to drive north on Route 1 and questions Amelia Williams about roadblocks.

Amelia Williams says the main roadblocks are around Lewiston, where Parrakis was captured, about thirty miles away. This reveals that Parrakis got much farther than Richards expected, but it also confirms that the authorities are tightening the search area.

Richards explains that Amelia Williams is his protection and that Richards needs to reach Voigt Field in Derry. Amelia Williams insists the distance is far greater than Richards was told and warns that Richards will never get through, but Richards replies that both of them might survive if Amelia Williams cooperates.
