Richards argues that he has managed to build a hand of his own. By calling the newsie line in Rockland, Richards forced the confrontation into public view, making it harder for the authorities to kill him cleanly without witnesses. He believes the Free-Vee, which normally strengthens the Network’s control, now limits its options because viewers would have to believe what they saw.
Richards identifies the elements protecting him: the media attention, the threat of unrest from “his people” gathered nearby, Amelia as a respectable middle-class hostage, and Richards himself. He says these cards are not enough without the ace of spades, which he admits he does not have.
Richards then takes Amelia’s handbag and stuffs it into his coat so it bulges visibly. Amelia doubts the gesture can help him, but Richards says the bag is his unseen hole card. Believing the authorities are cowardly after years of rigging the game, Richards prepares to run a bluff.
