…Minus 014 and COUNTING… “Your boy is very good,” Richards sa
Overview
With Richards wounded and stripped of leverage, Killian changes the stakes by offering him McCone’s position as Chief Hunter instead of immediate execution. The offer reframes Richards not merely as prey but as valuable Network property, showing how fully the system can absorb even its fiercest enemy. Killian’s final revelation that Richards’s wife and daughter are already dead destroys the motive that drove Richards into the game and leaves him facing the Network with nothing personal left to save.
Summary
After Donahue withdraws, Ben Richards recognizes that Donahue has kept control of the situation. Richards is wounded, exhausted, and beginning to suffer intermittent double vision, and Richards assumes the Network will simply arrange a public execution at the airport.
Instead, Killian says there is now a deal. Richards senses that Killian has been withholding something important, and Richards dreads hearing it, but Richards cannot escape the Free-Vee or the conversation.
Killian explains that McCone is finished because Richards has psychologically broken him. Rather than kill Richards immediately, the Network wants Richards to replace McCone as Chief Hunter, arguing that the best runner would know how to find future runners and that the Network constantly needs new talent.
Richards is stunned because the offer appears genuine: Amelia has her pocketbook back, Richards has no leverage, and Donahue and McCone are armed. When Richards objects that a Chief Hunter with a family would be vulnerable to extortion, Killian reveals the hidden reason the offer can stand: Richards’s wife and daughter have already been dead for more than ten days.
