Overview

Richards’s standoff with the Network reaches its deadline as the authorities stall with claims of frozen aircraft flaps and try to shake Richards’s confidence in Amelia. Richards refuses to extend the terms and chooses to move toward the airfield and fuel tanks, escalating the threat behind Richards’s bluff.

When the Network claims Amelia has talked and threatens to shoot, no one fires, confirming that Richards’s deception still has power. The chapter shifts the confrontation from negotiation to action, with Richards forcing the Network to keep yielding.

Summary

As Richards waits inside the vehicle at Voigt Airfield, time refuses to feel suspended. The authorities twice announce over the amplifier that Richards is lying about having Dynacore, and Richards answers that if they believe that, they should open fire.

The Network changes tactics by claiming the Lockheed’s flaps are frozen and that another aircraft must be fueled. Richards agrees only on the condition that the original deadline remains unchanged, refusing to let the mechanical excuse weaken his leverage.

As the minutes run down, Richards listens to the aircraft engines and imagines the interrogators trying to break Amelia. Richards cannot clearly picture Amelia anymore; her face blends with those of people already caught in the violence around him, including Stacey, Bradley, Elton, Virginia Parrakis, and the boy with the dog. Richards wonders whether Amelia is strong enough to protect the bluff.

With seven minutes left, the amplified voice asks for more time, saying the flaps must be treated with liquid hydrogen. Richards refuses further negotiation and announces that when time expires, Richards will drive up the service ramp with one hand on the wheel and one on the imploder ring, getting closer to the fuel tanks as Richards goes.

At the deadline, Richards discovers that Richards has bitten through Richards’s own lips from tension. Richards puts the car in gear and starts moving. The voice shouts that Amelia has talked and that they will shoot if Richards moves, but no shots are fired, proving that the Network still cannot risk calling Richards’s bluff.
