Overview
Bradley successfully gets Richards through two more police stops and into a garage, despite Richards's worsening physical condition in the trunk. The chapter reinforces how widely distorted reports about Richards and Laughlin have spread, while showing Bradley's risky commitment to helping Richards continue the game. Richards reaches the next getaway car, but the escape remains fragile and temporary.
Summary
Bradley continues driving with Ben Richards hidden in the trunk, and the trip feels far longer than ninety minutes to Richards because of cold, cramped pain and fear. They are stopped twice more: once for a routine license check, and once by a drawling policeman who casually repeats Network-fueled rumors that bikers are helping Richards and that Laughlin has committed another crime.
After the final stop, Richards drifts into a dazed semiconsciousness, unable to sleep but nearly overwhelmed by physical misery. As the car enters a city interchange, the loops, dives, and banking turns make Richards carsick, and Richards is too cramped to shift position; one arm has gone numb from being trapped under Richards's body.
The car descends into an indoor garage, and Richards realizes with relief that they have reached their destination. Bradley exchanges a few words with an attendant, drives to the assigned rampway, parks beside Richards's next car, and turns off the engine.
Bradley opens the trunk and warns Richards that the garage is empty and Richards's car is parked to the right. Richards is too stiff to climb out unaided, so Bradley hauls Richards from the trunk and pushes Richards into the battered green Wint, then gets in beside Richards.
Both men sit in the shadows, quietly smoking and absorbing the fact that they have successfully made it through the roadblocks. Their relief is muted by exhaustion and by the knowledge that Richards is only at another temporary stage in his flight.
